What National Regulators Need to Consider About AI.

When building regulations, let’s start with a straightforward (but often overlooked) question: “What form of country, society, and ecosystem are we trying to develop, support, and encourage in the Era of Artificial Intelligence?”

This is a question I find myself leading regulators, diplomats, and elected officials on regularly during our meetings. We have to focus on the risks and challenges posed by artificial intelligence, generative AI, and even more so AGI, but we also have to consider what we want.

A few excellent questions to ask your team if you are in government or if you are advising a government are the following:

  1. How do we want our citizens to interact, use, and adopt AI professionally and personally?

  2. Do we want to be a hub for developing new AI startups that can shape the future of global business, tech, and work?

  3. Do we want more or fewer AI companies within our borders?

  4. Do we want AI investors, business leaders, and founders to see our country as a safe AI Sandbox with broad and adaptable regulations allowing these hyper-scaling technologies to grow into what they could be?

  5. Do we want to adopt technologies that augment or automate work? How do we divide and combine the two into reasonable policies and laws?

  6. How will the shifts in productivity at the micro and macro levels impact national tax policy? How can the tax policy shift to ensure the proper maintenance of societal needs?

  7. What is the national vision of the country in the Era of AI? This will serve as a north star to guide all government sectors in the same direction.

  8. What does Artificial General Intelligence potentially mean for our citizens, companies, national security, and geopolitical position? (Btw. It’s only a few years away.)

These are some of the questions to help governments build concrete consensus around AI in a proactive trajectory that puts their citizens at the center of the policy design.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want me to speak with your team.
